A math crossword (also called crossmath or a number crossword) uses a crossword grid filled with digits instead of letters. Each across and down entry is an equation with +, −, ×, ÷, and = that must come out correct.

How do you solve a math crossword?

Start with short equations, multiplications, and divisions, which have fewer number options. Place a digit, then check every crossing equation. Intersections usually force the next digit. Save guessing for cells with only one or two candidates left.

Do math crosswords follow PEMDAS?

Check the puzzle rules. Many casual and app versions calculate strictly left to right and ignore standard order of operations. Others use PEMDAS, with × and ÷ before + and −. Division is almost always expected to give a whole number.

Can each cell hold more than one digit?

No. Each white cell holds one digit, 0–9. Operators and equals signs are printed in the grid or between entries. Leading zeros are usually not allowed, and the same digit can repeat unless the rules say otherwise.

What size math crossword should beginners start with?

Start with a 5×5 or 7×7 on Easy. Those boards are short enough to finish in a few minutes and teach crossing logic before 9×9 and 11×11 grids, which need longer chains of deductions.
